Seattle Introduction
Seattle is famous for a number of things, several of them global phenomena, think Boeing Aircraft, grunge music (especially Nirvana and Kurt Cobain), Starbucks coffee, Microsoft and network TV's Frasier. But it's more than just these punctuation points - it's a progressive and forward-thinking city that is worthy of more attention than it gets.
For many visitors the north-west corner of the United States is a stretch too far from the big eastern seaboard centres of LA or San Francisco. However, this location is something of a double-edged sword for Seattle as it also means that it occupies one of the most picturesque locations of any major US city. Immediately outside the city lie lush evergreen forests, salmon-rich clear streams and lakes and the volcanic bulk of Mount Rainier, a draw for serious climbers around the world.
Seattle was originally founded over 150 years ago by white settlers including the Denny family who named their town Alki, a native word meaning "by and by". The names Denny and Alki can still be identified all over the city, but it was less than a year before the party moved on to another location, aided by a local Indian Chieftain from the Duwamish tribe. The new settlement bore his name, or at least the name in the way that the settlers pronounced it "Seattle".
Unfortunately in just 50 or so short years there was to be little more than this legacy of the Duwamish. Although they welcomed the settlers, by the first decade of the 20th century the settlement of just five families had grown to a town of a quarter of a million. Logging had denuded the surrounding countryside and the natives had been displaced and scattered. Progress was swift and not exactly straightforward. The levelling of Seattle's naturally rather lumpy landscape had meant that half of the city was buried way below street level, with stories relating how some front doors required ladders to reach the pavement. Eventually this "city" was buried in around 1910, and building continued above it - you can still take tours of the old city, a fascinating chance to see intact relics of a bygone age.
Since such seeming follies the city hasn't made many more similar errors. Architecturally it is one of the most interesting cities in the US, with flagship buildings from most eras of the 20th century. It also benefits from its proximity to Canada, and is something of a mixture of the two prevalent cultures north and south of the border, with many European visitors venturing that the atmosphere is more typical of their side of the Atlantic. Whether Seattle would go for this description is another thing, the pioneer spirit of the founders still courses through the city's veins, giving it an air of independence that is rare in an American destination outside of the big three or four.
Self-assured and full of character, Seattle will no doubt be a growing inclusion on North American tourist maps in coming years, make sure it's pencilled in on yours right now.
