Weather in New Zealand
New Zealand enjoys a sub-tropical climate in the northern island and a temperate climate in the southern island. In the north island temperatures reach 20 degrees, even during the winter months. Prevailing weather comes from the west, across the Tasman Sea, so the west coast tends to be wetter than that of the east. Rainfall varies little and is evenly distributed throughout the year. In New Zealand the seasons are reversed and the summer begins in December through February, while winter begins in June through august. The hottest months are January and February, while the coldest are July and august.
CLOTHING: during the summer light to medium wear is advised with good walking shoes and also good sunglasses. In the bush areas beware of changes in the weather. Clothing is normally informal, but some hotels will not accept jeans and may also ask men to wear a tie. An umbrella or raincoat is also advisable.
