Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) Introduction
The capital of the South Indian state of Kerala, Trivandrum has plenty of charm, with a number of historical attractions in the city as well as some of India's finest beaches nearby.
The name Trivandrum is the Anglicised version of Thiruvananthapuram, which means "the town of Anantha", Anantha being the thousand-headed serpent often depicted in Hindu paintings with Vishnu lying on its back. This name is celebrated in the city's Padmanabha Swamy Temple, a beautiful complex of buildings dedicated to Lord Vishnu. As well as its religious significance, the city boasts a long history as a centre of the arts. Performing and decorative arts in particular flourished under the patronage of the Travancore kings, and still today, Trivandrum is renowned for its contributions to art and architecture.
This history seems to have rubbed off on the well-educated populace, who embrace culture in all its forms. Kerala is the birthplace of kalarippayattu, one of the oldest martial arts in the world, and kathakali, a classical dance in which dancers enact a mythological story dressed in colourful costumes and masks. You might also come across kalamezhuthu, pictures depicting Hindu deities drawn straight onto the floor with coloured powders, a tradition dating back 2000 years. Ayurveda, the traditional medicine based on herbs and roots, is still practised here too.
In addition to all this, easy-going Trivandrum has several museums and numerous other temples well worth exploring. It's a shame that many visitors miss out on most of the city's cultural attractions in their rush to get to the beach at Kovalam. Though the beach is stunning, the real beauty of the city is that you can easily combine lounging and sightseeing with a minimum of hassle. So if you want the best of both worlds, Trivandrum might just be a good place for you.>
